All About Kale

Join the Kale Revolution
Are you ready to join the Kale revolution? Start incorporating this nutrient-dense vegetable into your meals and experience the amazing benefits for yourself. Whether you're a Kale enthusiast or new to the leafy green scene, now's time to embrace all that Kale has to offer.
Kale arrives in our veg boxes in early Autumn. The 2 main varieties grown are Green Kale and Cavolo Nero, or Black Kale. Sometimes there is Red Russian Kale too, but this is not popular so its planting is sporadic.
Did you know that kale belongs to the same family as broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts? It's part of the cruciferous vegetable family, so called as the 4 leaves for a cross. All part of the Brassica Family, which includes Pak Choi, Mustards and Cress amongst many others.
Most of our Farmers dabble in Kale. Our main growers are:
Dickie Ovenden - Sandwich - 43 Food Miles
Lasletts - Ash - 41 Food Miles
Bradleys - Wingham- 39 Food Miles
Our new growers Jack Scott and Laura @ Wonky Parsnip have also started to grow too.
Kales become a staple in the Veg Boxes after Christmas as other leaf veg succumbs to the cold weather. Kale is the tough guy of Leaf Veg, although Cavolo Nero is the weaker twin.
As it is such a staple of the Winter Veg Boxes getting used to cooking it is essential. Scroll down for some ideas but I'd say KALE MAKES GREAT SOUP.
